HEAC-CCROPP Storybank
What is the Storybank?
As part of the Healthy Eating, Active Communities (HEAC) and Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program (CCROPP) programs, communities have succeeded in making many concrete, visible, on-the-ground changes that have improved food and physical activity environments for children. There are many, many stories that could be told about new or reclaimed parks, new farmers markets, active and healthy after school programs, and much, much more. For the HEAC-CCROPP Storybank, TCE hired professional journalist Sylvia Sukop to interview people and write up several of these success stories. They are posted here for your use in advocacy, with media, for presentations and anywhere else that a good, compelling example would help you make your case.
How the stories can be used
These stories are provided for use by food and physical activity advocates including HEAC and CCROPP grantees, partners, and other allies, to use in presentations, in discussion with media, in your brochures or other materials, and to engage potential partners and new stakeholders. They have been written to be dynamic and accessible, and to highlight what it means to improve food and physical activity environments. They are also designed to show that change is possible, and to inspire others to pursue such change. Please draw upon these and adapt them to your needs. You can cut and paste sections of them, retell them in your own words, or otherwise use them as needed.
When the stories will be available
The Storybank will eventually include 25 stories, with at least one from each HEAC and CCROPP site. The stories will be developed through August 2009. In addition, photos illustrating each story will eventually be available. In order to make it possible for you to begin using the stories as soon as possible, they will be posted to this site in batches, as they are completed, with photos to follow. Feel free to use stories from other communities as well as your own.
Writing Your Story
Writing Your Story. Tips on identifying and gathering additional stories from your work.
Stories capture people's hearts and imagination, and are a great way to engage people in your work. HEAC and CCROPP communities have achieved many more changes than can be captured here, as have many other communities. Journalist Sylvia Sukop who wrote these stories has also provided tips for gathering and writing your own stories, or identifying stories and gathering information before you hire a writer.
