Youth Development

  • Youth in Philanthropy
HEAC, The California Endowment, and the California Center for Civic Participation and Youth Development are being featured on the Foundation Center website "Youth in Philanthropy Health Month Features". The feature focuses on youth engagement in their communities and with the Statewide Youth Board on Obesity Prevention.

  • Developmental Assets for Youth
The developmental assets model for youth is a valuable framework for structuring services, systems, and supports for youth so that young people develop the skills and competencies they need to thrive and enter adulthood ready to face the challenges of adult life. The youth development model is grounded in the concept of resiliency - giving youth skills to overcome or deal with negative things in their environment. Attached is a link to the Search Institute where you can learn more about the developments assets and view the lists for a number of age categories, including the recently added adolescent list. Arnell Hinkle of CANFit has also offered her notes from a presentation on how to apply nutrition and physical activity to the youth development model. http://www.search-institute.org/assets/assetlists.html

  • Building Partnerships for Youth
This website developed by the National 4-H Council has a number of resources for youth development, including an assessment tool that allows groups to answer a series of questions relating to their program and get instant feedback on how your program integrates youth development. A new Community Collaboration Tool includes a PowerPoint presentation that can be customized to help bring people together about issues that are important for the health, education and well-being of young people. The presentation provides practical examples for how community, family, and school can be strengthened through non-school-hour youth development programs. Included in the presentation are questions designed to initiate discussion among state and community groups.
