California Project LEAN

Organization Overview

California Project LEAN (Leaders Encouraging Activity and Nutrition) (CPL) is a joint program of the California Department of Health Services and the Public Health Institute focusing on youth empowerment, policy and environmental change strategies, and community-based solutions. CPL's mission is to increase healthy eating and physical activity to reduce the prevalence of obesity and chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, and diabetes.

CPL works with state and local physical activity and nutrition leaders to conduct programs in communities throughout California. Through an infrastructure of ten regions, CPL implements local interventions, including the following:

  • Food on the Run, originally funded by The California Endowment, engages adolescent and community leaders in the development of healthy food and physical activity environments at schools. CPL works with local coordinators to identify effective community-based solutions.
  • The Successful Students Through Healthy Food Policies Campaign is an outgrowth of Food on the Run and is conducted in partnership with the California School Boards Association. The project's goal is to strengthen nutrition policies in California school districts.
  • The Huesos Fuertes, Familia Saludable Campaign works with California communities to increase low fat milk consumption among Spanish-speaking women and their families.
