Kaiser Permanente

Organization Overview

Kaiser Permanente is America's leading integrated health care organization. Founded in 1945, it is a non-profit health plan, with headquarters in Oakland, California. In 2003 Kaiser Permanente served the health care needs of 8.2 million members in nine states and Washington, D.C. There were over 6.2 million members and 100,000 employees and physicians in California alone.

Kaiser Permanente aspires to be the world leader in improving health through high-quality, affordable, integrated health care. We are distinguished by our strong social purpose, physician responsibility for clinical care, and enduring cooperation between our health plan and our medical groups.

Kaiser Permanente is committed to addressing the epidemic of overweight and obesity comprehensively with clinical prevention and treatment strategies as well as through broader public health interventions. We are pleased to participate as a partner, funder and technical support provider for the California Endowment's Health Eating, Active Communities (HEAC) program.

Technical Support for HEAC Grantees

Kaiser Permanente's technical support for the HEAC program includes providing support and resources to each community's healthcare sector, as well as encouraging collaboration across the six healthcare sector groups and between the healthcare sector and the other program sectors.

We have a variety of resources to share including:

  • Trainings for providers on
    • effective methods to screen, counsel, motivate and refer pationets about weight management issues,
    • how to advocate for environmental and policy change in their communities, and
    • the use of academic detailing as an effective training tool;
  • Presentations for providers who are invited to speak to parent, teacher or student groups on the issue of overweight;
  • Clinic tools such as BMI wheels and exam room posters; and
  • Patient education materials for children, teens and their parents.

We can also work with communities to locate, develop or modify other resources.
